In 2007, Larry came to Meru to start a band in Meru. He didn’t know what to expect, but he forged ahead anyways. This past September, that band performed at the TEDx convention in Nairobi. A big accomplishment for a little band with no Western music background and no music-reading skills before 2007! I know it’s really out of tune and not very refined, but it is a great accomplishment, especially considering the teacher didn’t know how to play an instrument or read music before 2007. I’m still keeping my ears open for what kind of effect the band may have on these kids in the eyes of not only the adults, but also the kids.
