I booked it yesterday. They are going to check to make sure there’s still room, and if there is, I’m in for sure. I will leave on August 3rd, start the climb on the 5th, hopefully summit on the 11th, and then be back in Meru on the 13th. A big trip!
The only issue is that I don’t have any climbing gear except my hiking boots. I would have to say this is the most important thing, since my boots are already broken in. I can rent gear in Moshi, at the base of the mountain, but there is a small chance that certain things will not be available in the rental rooms. So I am going to try to purchase as much as I can in Nairobi.
This brings up the issue of Nairobi. Shopping in Nairobi isn’t like shopping in New York City. Everyone says that I’ll be okay as long as I don’t look at anyone, don’t ask for directions, don’t look like I need directions, and also as long as my bags are not hanging from my back or sides. harumph. I’m hoping my Meru connections will pull through with someone in Nairobi who can be my chaperone. If that doesn’t work, I think I can call a cab recommended by the hotel where I will be staying. And if THAT doesn’t work, I have a map that I can memorize, and as long as I walk with confidence, I think I’ll be okay.
