Things unrelated to teaching

The rooster outside our door – bane of our existence. He starts daily at 3:30am. I have earplugs, which allow me to block out the rooster from 3:30 until about 5:30am. By then, I can’t ignore him any longer. Marilyn usually wakes to him right away. Poor Marilyn.

While playing cards tonight, we (me and Ann) decided that everyone needs nicknames. So we (basically Ann) came up with these: 1) Larry “Leftie” Dittmar. It was originally “Farkle,” since he went on an excellent Farkle run in one game. (Farkle is a dice game.) We shortened it to LFD, which turned into Leftie. I think this nickname will stick. 2) Geri “Satchmo” Arnold. For reasons I won’t get into here, Geri has been equated to trumpeting. There have been funny references to calling the elephants with her trumpeting skills, and when we started making nicknames, Ann dubbed Geri as the name of one the greats. 3) Marilyn “Albert” Kesler, since she seemed to know ALL the rules to Hearts even though she claimed to have not played it in at least 10 years. I mentioned to Ann that Marilyn didn’t seem to like Einstein. Marilyn chimed in that, yes, she disliked it. Without missing a beat, Ann said, “Then how about Albert?” Maybe you had to be there, but it was really funny. 4) Ann “Wile E. Coyote” Schoelles. She is a wiley one at the card games, so it just seemed to fit. We’ll see if this one sticks. 5) For reasons unknown, Ann called Bill “Peabody,” and it just seemed to fit. I’m not sure this one will stick. 6) Everyone seemed to have brought group games, but all I brought was my DS, which can only be played by me. Solo. So Ann started calling me “Hans.” We’ll see if that sticks too. — Can you tell there is no TV? It’s a party!
